Schinkel, Karl Friedrich

Schinkel, Karl Friedrich
Designer, theater architect. Schinkel was the most active of "classical" German stage designers in the second decade of the 19th century, but his most significant work was the architectural design for the Royal Theater in Berlin, which opened in 1820 on Gendarme Square. It was known popularly as the "Schinkel-Bau," or Schinkel Building. Schinkel also completed several stage designs of plays by Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, and William Shakespeare for August Wilhelm Iffland's successor at the Royal Theater, Count Karl Brühl (1772-1837), between 1821 and 1828.
